How to Count Stitches (and Never Lose Track Again)

You’ve mastered how to chain and make stitches — now it’s time for one of the most important crochet skills: counting your stitches.
This simple habit keeps your projects even, symmetrical, and frustration-free (no more lopsided Booty Pillows!).

Step 1: Find the “V”

Hold your yarn so the top of your work faces you.
Each stitch forms a small sideways “V” at the top — that’s what you’ll count.

Step 2: Start Counting

1️⃣ Turn your pre-started yarn to the top.
2️⃣ Starting from the first stitch in the round, count each “V” one by one.
It’s totally fine to turn your project around as you count — it helps you see all the stitches more clearly.

Step 3: Double-Check Your Count

Depends on the project you're working on, make sure how many stitches you should have. In our booty pillow project, we should have 16 stitches in total.
If you find more than the number you have, that means you’ve added an extra one.
To fix it, just pull on the long thread to remove one stitch.

💡 Tip: The stitch where your yarn tail starts is usually your first stitch — don’t skip it!

✨ Always count at the end of every round — it keeps your Booty’s shape perfect.
✨ Use the stitch markers from your Booty Pillow Kit to mark the start of each round.
✨ Counting out loud or marking every few stitches helps you keep your place.
